Non-spoiler review

Author:  Darren Shan

Series: Cirque Du Freak

Genre: Paranormal

Age: Older MG

OV: 1st person

Summary: Darren Shan and his best friend, Steve, get tickets to the Cirque Du Freak, a wonderfully gothic freak show featuring weird, frightening half human/half animals who interact terrifyingly with the audience. In the midst of the excitement, true terror raises its head when Steve recognizes that one of the performers-- Mr. Crepsley-- is a vampire!

Review: A little know series that has a unique concept. I have seen the books all the time at book sales and never give them a second thought until I saw the movie ‘The Vampire Assistant’. Which I did a movie review on.

The writing and characters are good. I like the unique spin on vampires. Hopefully, get to learn more in the next book.

Characters:

Darren – Likes spiders. Gets along with his little sister and sticks up for his friends.

Steve – A total jack a**. I can understand why Darren is his friend. At times seems like it out of pity.

The book starts the series out strong. From what I read from other reviews I was expecting more gore. I guess that comes later unless it a book by Robin Jarvis.

The story takes its time to set up the world and characters. You’re not throw in this world only given information about it in hints. There no overall arcing complex…yet.

Points:

Characters: 5/5 – There a strong sibling relationship.

Writing: 5/5 – fast and engaging

Plot: 5/5 – A strong start to a series. Not exactly a cliffhanger but, leaves you wanting more.

+1 I do want more and see what happens next.

Total: 16/20
