WintersongGoodreads: Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones
Genre: Fantasy
Age: YA
POV: 1st person

Summary: All her life, Liesl has heard tales of the beautiful, dangerous Goblin King. They've enraptured her mind and spirit and inspired her musical compositions. Now eighteen and helping to run her family’s inn, Liesel can't help but feel that her musical dreams and childhood fantasies are slipping away. But when her own sister is taken by the Goblin King, Liesl has no choice but to journey to the Underground to save her.

Review: I have heard others compare this to Labyrinth. I have never seen the movie and all I know of it is that it a cheesy 80s movie. Although I have seen Pan’s Labyrinth and what Wintersong has in common with it, is that they are both atmospheric and have a dark fairy tale vibe to them.

I like the first part of the book with Leial rescuing her sister from the goblin king. The whole story has a wintery fairy tale vibe. The description of the music being played adds to the atmosphere. I like the use of the musical terms, that are both old and new to me. I never got far enough in playing the violin to know what a scordatura is.

There a nice strong sibling relationship. How Liesl care for her brother and sister differently really stands out.

The writing is beautiful and flows. There not a lot of fast past action scenes, but when there is the writing is choppy.

I didn’t like the romance between Liesl and the goblin king. They push each other away and then cline to each other, then push again. It confusing and off putting.

Main Characters:

Liesl: Loves music and loves both her siblings. Think she just plain and simple.

Der Erlkonig (the goblin king): Mysteries and cold, but is warm hearted to Liesl and her music

There are some things I like about this book and then there are things I dislike about this book. Wintersong is enjoyable to read and I might go on to read the second book.

Characters: 4/5

Plot: 3/5 - The first part is good and the rest slows the story down.

Writing: 3/5
