Author: Helene Boudreau

Genre: Mermaids, fantasy, magic realism

Age: MG

POV: 1st person

Summary: Getting your first period is not that easy, sprouting a fish tail in the tub is not either. Jade soon discovers she inherited her mermaid tendencies from her mom. But if mom was a mermaid? Then how did she drown? Jade is determined to find out. How does a plus-size aqua-phobic mer-girl go about doing that explain? And how will Jade be able to explain her secret to her best friend and her crush Luke?

Review: A great coming of age story. The first few chapters set up a girl getting her first period as well as the embarrassing and humorist moments that come with it. I like the relationship Jade has with her dad and her best friend. Everything is day to day small town life only with mermaids. Adding interesting drama.

Jade is described as being plus size and having a lack of confidence that goes along with turning into a mermaid. You feel her grief towards losing her mom. When Jade finds out her mom is still alive, Jade does everything she can to be with her.

The writing seems to be trying to appeal to younger teens. It not necessarily a bad thing, just that it could be a hit or miss. The events happening in the story could have been spread out a little more and last longer.
